The O.P.P. targeting aggressive driving all long weekend

ORILLIA, ON – As the long weekend starts, the O.P.P. is reminding drivers, they’re patrolling roads looking for four major issues.

All across the province and here in cottage country, the O.P.P. will be on the roads with a campaign against aggressive driving.

According to the police, last Canada Day weekend, the O.P.P. responded to 64 speed-related collisions, three of those someone lost their life.

Aside from the crashes, O.P.P. reported 7,393 speeding charges over the four-day weekend.

O.P.P. Commisioner Thomas Carrique had this to say about the campaign “As you celebrate with your family and friends this Canada Day weekend, expect higher than normal volumes of traffic. This will require your full attention and patience on the road. Take your time, stay calm, and don’t allow other drivers to affect your judgment. Your actions will ensure everyone has a safe holiday.”

For added contrast, the O.P.P. says last year they laid 215,060 speeding charges in 2018, with 76 of the year’s 333 road deaths being attributed to speeding.

Speeding, following too close, unsafe lane changes, disobeying traffic signs and lights, and road rage are all forms of aggressive driving.
