Town risking fines to keep public transit running

Public transit in Parry Sound will continue as is until a plan is made to operate under new government rules.  November 17th is the deadline for all to be compliant under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the corporation and directors could face large fines for operating out of compliance.  Council directed staff’s proposal to provide an up-to-date AODA compliant public transportation plan for the Town of Parry Sound, conditional on the development of a partnership agreement between the Town and Belvedere Heights Community Volunteer Transportation Program.  Councillors agreed that they would rather run the public transit and risk fines, than cease operation until an AODA compliant option is available.  CAO Rob Mens says pending an agreement with Belvedere, Parry Sound could have an AODA compliant option available by June of next year.
