Parry Sound getting $56k in gas tax funding

Parry Sound is getting some gas tax money.

The town is one of 107 municipalities across Ontario benefitting from the provincial program this year.  Parry Sound will be receiving $56,314.

The money has to go to helping support and build up public transit systems. That means it can be spent on things like upgrading transit infrastructure, increasing accessibility, buying transit vehicles, adding more routes, and extending hours of service.

In total, the province says it will be handing out $364 million in gas tax funding covering more than 92 per cent of Ontario’s total population.

The government calculates the gas tax program based on how many litres of gasoline is sold in Ontario. Municipalities get two cents per litre of the collected gas tax revenues.  The share each municipality gets is then based on a 70 per cent ridership/30 per cent population formula.
