Lakeland Power looking to reduce rates in Parry Sound

Lakeland Power has applied to change its electricity distribution rates.

The objective of the meeting is to harmonize the rates and charges of the former Parry Sound Power Corporation to Lakeland Power Distribution Ltd.

Margaret Maw, CEO of Lakeland Power, says that Parry Sound customers are currently paying approximately $6.93 more than the rest of Lakeland’s service area. Lakeland Power merged with Parry Sound Power Corporation in July 2014.

Maw says that Parry Sound customers were paying the “approved rate” and that rates depend on the size of the territory. The total cost of running the entire operation and divides by the total number of customers and their kilowatt-hour usage in order to get new rates.

Hydro companies can apply for rate changes annually.

The Ontario Energy Board is holding the community meetings so that consumers can have an opportunity to speak with utility representatives directly and ask why they want the change they’re proposing, ask questions about their process and find out how to get involved.

Residents can provide comments about the application, verbally or in writing, which Lakeland says will be given to the decision-makers to consider as part of the hearings process.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 28th, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at the Stockey Centre.
