Mental Health First-Aid Course Offered Locally

Mental Health First Aid saves lives.

That’s what instructor Suzann Witt-Foley said about Canadore College’s two-day certification course happening on December 10th and 11th.

“Similar to physical first-aid, we are training people to support someone who is in a mental health crisis or support someone who lives with mental health problems,” Witt-Foley said. The course is governed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada and is open to all members of the public.

“We know that first-aid and CPR saves lives. We now know in Canada that one in three people will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives,” she said. The Mental Health First Aid course is important training for individuals to be prepared in a crisis or emergency until the affected person can get help.

“Doesn’t it make sense that we all know how to support one another, not just with physical health but with our mental health as well? “Witt-Foley added. The Mental Health First Aid certification is the first of its kind and is offered in 23 other countries around the world. For registration information, click here.
