Evacuation Alert issued for Alban as Parry Sound 33 fire nears 9000 hectares

As Parry Sound 33 continues to grow an Evacuation Alert for the Alban area has been issued. It’s in effect for those west of the high powered hydro lines on Highway 64. That means residents need to prepare themselves to be evacuated on short notice for an extended period of time if the next step, an evacuation order, is issued.

The forest fire, one of the largest in Ontario, now sits at close to 8974 hectares in size. It first started on July 18th near Henvey Inlet. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry still lists the fire as “Not Under Control.” The fire is burning roughly an hour north of Parry Sound, which means the town is not in any imminent danger.

Both ground crews and water bombers are being used to try to stop the blaze from growing. The cause of Parry Sound 33 has yet to be determined.
