Magnetawan FN will look at climate change through tradition and science

Magnetawan First Nation has received funding to learn about the impact of climate change on significant and at-risk indigenous lands and species. The species-at-risk biologist with Magnetawan First Nation, Cory Kozmik says The Indigenous Community-Based Climate Monitoring Program is a beautiful integration of western science and traditional knowledge. Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada has provided 3 years of funding for the project.

Magnetawan First Nation has partnered with McMaster University, Laurentian University, Boreal Water Futures and Anishinabek/Ontario Fisheries Resource Centre for a science perspective. Kozmik says McMaster University students will set up a weather station and then ultimately involve the Magnetawan First Nation community:

Kozmik says Magnetawan First Nation youth will be involved in this project, as they will have the opportunity to learn from their elders:

Kozmik says the project should begin within the next few months. She adds that even though the project is only funded until 2021, Magnetawan First Nation will still have the equipment to continue gathering and sharing their findings beyond the 3 years.
