Council approves Waubuno Beach as site for splash pad

Parry Sound Council has approved Waubuno Beach to be the future site of a splash pad. Co-chair of the Splash Pad Steering Committee, Chris MacDonald calls the decision a big step forward. In council, councillors Bonnie Keith and Keith Saulnier both questioned the lack of costed items, Keith questioned the cost of showers and chlorination. Saulnier says we want to give you an answer, but you haven’t answered any of our questions, what’s the final price? Parry Sound recreation manager April MacNamara responded by saying the costs are not in the report because a decision was not made for what type of park it will exist in.

Nora Alexander responded by saying a petition has 70 signatures opposing the splash pad. Alexander says that the splash pad’s costs are too expensive for its seasonal use.

Alexander added the proposed pool complex would do more to attract local families and newcomers. She concluded by asking, Waubuno is a natural splash pad, why do we need a fake one?

MacDonald says now that Waubuno has been designated, further number-crunching can be done.

The committee is hoping to have the pad ready by next year.
