Opioid usage on the rise across Canada and in region

Opioid usage is on the rise across the country according to a new study.

This is according to the Canadian Institute for health information. According to CIHI between April 2016 and March 2017 16 Canadians were hospitalized every day due to opioid poisoning. This is 19 per cent more than two years ago. These numbers don’t include people who died of overdose before arriving at a hospital.

Opioid usage in Parry Sound and North Bay is also increasing. Between 2010 and 2015 an average of 14 people died a year due to opioids. That’s eight more deaths on average than between 2005 and 2009.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information is a not-for-profit organization that provides information on Canada’s health systems.
