GBBR has full plate of events in September

There’s a full plate of food-related events in Parry Sound this September.

The Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is taking part in three events around town, all of which incorporate locally-sourced food.

The Harvest Festival and Farm Tour is taking place at Parry Sound High School on September 23. There are six free sessions during the event, including making homemade cheese, growing microgreens, improving soils, canning foods, tips to saving seeds and growing garlic.

These workshops will be followed by an optional lunch of locally sourced food prepared by culinary students from the high school. The lunch will cost $10.

Following lunch, a bus will leave the highschool to visit a shiitake mushroom and heritage farm. The tour will cost $5.

The tour is part of the GBBR’s Eat Around the Sound series. The workshops focus on different food unique to Parry Sound. Each event was themed around a different part of the Anishinaabe lunar year. The Harvest Festival and Farm Tour is centered on the Falling Leaves Moon.

Canadore College is hosting the Sweet Honey Festival the same day. It’s a free event from 1-5 pm and will showcase local honey. There will also be a honey tasting contest and wine pairings at the event.

The final 2017 Eat Around the Sound event is happening September 26. The final EATS event is a celebration dinner featuring local shitaake mushrooms. Tickets are $30.
