Local woman targeted for telemarketing scam

A Parry Sound local says she was the target of a telemarketing scam.

Earlier in August, the local woman received a call from a phone number with a 780 area code, which is based in Alberta.

The caller told the woman that her credit card was maxed out and asked for her card number over the phone. She hung up the phone before providing the caller with any more information.

According to Canada’s Anti-Fraud Centre there are a number of steps to take if you become a victim of a scam. A fraud victim should collect all available information about the scam, including documents, receipts and copies of emails and text. Then they should report the incident to local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, as well as the financial service or institution the money was sent to.

The CAFC also asks the public to be proactive. Letting the community know about a fraud or attempted fraud can help stop someone else from becoming a victim.
