AMO calls for one percent sales tax rise

Municipalities from across the province are supporting a one per cent sales tax increase.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario are now in day two of their annual conference. President Lynn Dollin kicked off the event asking for the sales tax increase, which would be dedicated to be used on local infrastructure.

Parry Sound Council voted last week to support AMO’s calls for a sales tax increase.

According to AMO, to maintain current services and to close the infrastructure gap municipalities face a $4.9 billion shortfall over the next ten years.

AMO believes the one per cent sales tax increase can help municipalities deal with rising costs of maintaining and building new infrastructure.
