Bear struck by two cars on Highway 400, shot by police

The West Parry Sound OPP is standing by its officer’s decision to dispatch an injured bear.

Police received multiple calls on Friday night about a black bear on Highway 400 in Parry Sound.

According to Staff Sergeant Mike Gordon the bear was struck by two cars in the northbound lanes between the Oastler Park and Bowes Street exits. He says an officer at the scene addressed the situation and decided to put the animal out of its misery.

The OPP says a concern for public safety as well the suffering of the animal on the road led the officer to shoot the bear.

A number of drivers had also pulled over to the side of the road near the scene. Gordon says they received a call from a concerned driver who narrowly avoided hitting a bystander standing on the highway.

The OPP is reminding drivers to be mindful of animals near the roads, especially near dawn and dusk. If you spot any wildlife near the road, police say to avoid swerving and cover your brake.
