Parry Sound schools not expected to suffer despite school board deficit next year

The Near North District School Board will be running a deficit for the next school year.  At their finance meeting last week, it was learned that they’ll be heading into the 2016-17 school year over $900,000 short.  A major factor is the decline in provincial top-up funding for boards with secondary school within 20 kilometers of each other and elementary schools within 10 kilometers of each other.  Board Chair David Thompson says even though William Beatty and Victory were consolidated into Parry Sound Public School, Parry Sound still has a problem.

That funding is about $228,000.  Thompson says there is a plan in place to help the shortfall not affect local schools.

Thompson says he’s confident that the board’s Capital Plan and Multi-year Plan will address the financial issues moving forward.
