A plan to help reduce homelessness in the region has been laid out to Seguin council

Seguin is the latest West Parry Sound municipality to hear about a plan to reduce homelessness in the region.  Parry Sound and Area District Social Services Administration Board Manager of Housing and Community Services Janice Bray spoke to council at yesterday’s meeting about what they can do to help.  The target family DSSAB is looking at is lone parent families which according to the 2011 Census, Seguin has about 100 and 75 per cent of those are single mother families.  Data shows the median income for women in Seguin is under $20,000 which isn’t enough to afford housing in the region.  Seguin is asked to try and find affordable housing sites they could donate or provide at low cost, provide incentives for developers to include affordable units, and make amendments to municipal by-laws or zoning to allow affordable housing through secondary suites or co-housing models.
