Covid-19 cancellations cause shortfall in funds for local Service Club

Today should have marked the kick-off to the Rotary Club of West Parry Sound’s annual three-pitch tournament. A major fundraiser for the service Club.

However, it along with the club’s “Savour the Sound” had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year sponsorships from various local Municipalities and businesses accounted for $20,000 for the three-pitch alone and with the cancellation of the tournament this means a shortfall for Rotary in funds for the many programs they offer to the community.

At Seguin Council’s most recent meeting mayor MacDiarmid and Council thanked Rotary for their on-going grocery program with Sobeys delivering groceries to seniors and those in isolation. Council then agreed to honour a request from the Rotary Club of West Parry Sound to allow the Township’s sponsorship of the ball tournament to be used to support other Rotary programs.

Rotary’s Linda West says that sponsorship of $1750 will be added to one from Connor Industries who also agreed to contribute their $5,000 sponsorship to the Club’s community work.

Rotary is awaiting a response from two more municipalities to see if they are willing to follow suit.

Rotary’s new year starts in July and Rotary’s hopes to make a difference in the lives of those who need medical/mobility devices, are isolating (grocery program and planters), need tutoring, youth groups and other needs not yet defined in this very challenging year. Rotary supports all of West Parry Sound through the generosity of donors.

The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic prevented the Rotary from contacting other municipalities.
