Parry Sound High School’s annual youth-led Pow Wow is scheduled for May 29 at the Bobby Orr Community Centre.
According to student coordinator Keaton Gagnon, the event is about bringing the community together.
“(The Pow Wow is for) community building, sharing knowledge and just being with the community,” said Gagnon, who is part of the Oshkishkode Jingtamok 2026 group at the high school hosting the event.
This year the theme of the event is “Strength of the Earth.”
“The theme of the Pow Wow is about strength and unity and growing together as a community and as peers,” said student organizer Taioma Blacksky.
Indigenous studies teacher Andrew Brown encourages anyone and everyone from the community to come out and experience what this group of local high school students has put together.
“I would like to invite the entire community to come down and enjoy the festivities – the drumming, dancing, food – and to celebrate our youth, what they have accomplished this year, and what they have put together. It’s pretty impressive,” said Brown.
Along with the traditional singing, dancing and drumming, the Pow Wow will feature information booths from the Georgian Bay Biosphere and Shawanaga and Wausauksing First Nations.
Grand Entry will take place at 10 a.m.
