Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Graydon Smith is “deeply disappointed” with Canadore College’s decision to wind down operations at its West Parry Sound campus.
“My thoughts are with the students, employees, and families affected by this decision,” wrote Smith in an online statement. “A college is more than a place of learning. It is an employer, a community partner, and an important part of the local economy.”
On May 12, the college announced the local campus closure as part of a series of organizational changes being made, including workforce reductions and service adjustments. Officials say while provincial funding announcements and advocacy efforts are positive, Canadore continues to face the impacts of lower enrolment and increased financial pressures.
In February, the province announced a new long-term funding model that will provide an additional $6.4 billion to Ontario’s colleges, universities, and Indigenous Institutes, increasing annual operating funding from $5 billion to $7 billion starting this fall.
Smith referenced this and the federal governments shifting policy environment in his statement, and committed to continuing to work to help the college.
“I will continue to work with Canadore College, local partners, and the community to support affected students, families, employees and the broader Parry Sound economy,” wrote Smith. “While this is difficult news, I remain committed to ensuring our community’s voice is heard and that we continue fighting for access to education, training and opportunity close to home.”
