Parry Sound District, along with rest of Canada, growing older, according to latest census results

Mirroring what’s happening provincially and federally, the average age of people in the Parry Sound District has grown since 2016.

The latest results of the 2021 census, released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday, show that the average age in the district is 49.4, up from 47.8 in 2016.

The age groups were divided into three groups: zero to 14 years, 15 to 64 years, and 65 years or older. The group that saw the biggest jump in the last five years in the district was the oldest age group, which grew by 3,080 people to sit at 14,150.

The average age locally is higher than the province’s, 41.8, and Canada’s, 41.9.

When the initial census data was released in Feb. it showed that the district’s population grew by over 4,000 people since the last census. It now sits at 46,909. Most municipalities saw varying levels of population growth as well. Burk’s Falls and Powassan were the only ones that saw a decrease in residents.

Statistics Canada does a national census of population and census of agriculture every five years.
