Population growth in several area communities

The District of Parry Sound’s population has grown by over 4,000 people in the past five years.

Statistics Canada is starting to release the results of the 2021 census.

The district’s population added 4,085 new residents, which is up 9.5-percent from 2016. It puts Parry Sound District’s population at 46,909 people.

Here are 2021 Census figures for the area by order of largest increase to smallest:

Seguin is up to 5,280 from 4,304 (an increase of 976)

Parry Sound is up to 6,879 from 6,408 (an increase of 471)

The Archipelago is up to 979 from 531 (an increase of 448)

Carling is up to 1,491 from 1,125 (an increase of 366)

Magnetawan is up to 1,753 from 1,390 (an increase of 363)

McKellar is up to 1,419 from 1,111 (an increase of 308)

Whitestone is up to 1,075 from 916 (an increase of 159)

Callander is up to 3,964 from 3,863 (an increase of 101)

McDougall is up to 2,744 from 2,702 (an increase of 42)

Burk’s Falls is down to 957 from 981 (a decrease of 24)

Powassan is down to 3,346 from 3,455 (a decrease of 109)

The district’s growth in the past five years is nearly 10 times the growth seen between 2011 and 2016. The results of the 2001 census were released in May of that year. The district’s population had grown by just over 800 people that period.

Statistics Canada does a national census of population and census of agriculture every five years.
