Boats to be considered invasive species carriers

You’ll have to take extra care cleaning off your boat in the new year.

Starting on January 1st, 2022, all watercraft like boats, canoes and kayaks have been classified as carriers of invasive species. Before transporting boats or boat equipment over land, owners must remove or open all drain plugs and drain the water completely.

The legislation also says owners must take “reasonable precautions” to remove plants, animals and algae from boats, equipment, vehicles and trailers. However, the province recognizes that it may not be possible to completely remove plants, animals or algae. But is encouraging boaters to more thoroughly clean their watercraft, and invest in special equipment like pressure washers to make sure their boats are free of potentially invasive species.

If you spot an invasive species, call the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunter’s hotline at 1-800-563-7711.
