Special Meeting of Parry Sound Council Tuesday night

Parry Sound Council will hold a special Council meeting Tuesday evening (Nov.30) beginning at 8:00 p.m.

The reason for the meeting is to review Seguin Township’s  request for support for its plan to rezone approximately 700 acres adjacent to the Town’s southern boundary for residential development. The Town understands the plan by Seguin would permit up to 3,500 new homes over the next 15 years.

The area is located in the northwest corner of Seguin bordering the Town of Parry Sound, at the former Parry Sound Rd and Oastler Park Drive.

Seguin is seeking Parry Sound’s support for a Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO)  which would allow the residential development. An MZO allows the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to expedite rezoning and bypass public consultation processes.  A letter from Seguin in early November requested Parry Sound Council’s support for the MZO by December 3rd.

According to a press release from the Town. Mayor Jamie McGarvey said in part “This is a very significant proposal on very short notice. We need to understand the impact on the services the residents of West Parry Sound rely on such as health care, education and social services, as well as the demand that will be placed on our infrastructure, water, wastewater and roads,” “We’re committed to creating more housing options across West Parry Sound.”

Residents are welcome to attend the virtual special council meeting. A recording will also be available on the Town’s website following the meeting.
