NBPSDHU says COVID-19 vaccines are reducing severe illness

The majority of COVID-19 cases associated with the outbreak at the Chartwell Barclay House Retirement Residence in North Bay have been resolved.

As of Thursday morning, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit says 36 cases have been resolved. Seven are still active.

The outbreak at Au Château Home for the Aged in Sturgeon Falls is holding steady with two cases.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jim Chirico says none of the positive cases in either outbreak have had severe illnesses and there haven’t been any deaths either.

“Although the outbreaks are not yet over, I believe that we would be in a completely different situation should these outbreaks have taken place just a year ago before COVID-19 vaccines were available,”  he says.

Shannon Mantha, Executive Director of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Officer, says the local stats show that vaccinations are reducing severe outcomes.

“Locally since last June, 2021, less than four percent of fully immunized individuals who contracted COVID were hospitalized and less than one percent were in ICU,” she says.

As of Thursday morning, there are 26 active cases of COVID-19 in the region.  One person is in hospital.
