The special weather statement has been upgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning for the majority of cottage county.

Environment Canada has issued the statement with forecasts calling for potentially damaging winds and thunderstorms late this afternoon and into the early evening.

The areas affected include Baysville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Port Carling, Port Severn, Parry Sound, Rosseau and Killbear Park.

The weather agency says a line of showers and thunderstorms over Michigan is expected to move east to reach near Windsor and Lake Huron this afternoon with the remaining regions being hit later on.

Expect wind gusts of up to 90 km/h with some of these storms, along with torrential downpours and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the forecast and severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued in some areas as the system moves closer.
