Harmful algae spotted at Manitouwabing Lake

MCKELLAR, ON-The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit has confirmed that harmful blue-green algae has been spotted at Manitouwabing Lake.

This algae in the Township of McKellar is capable of producing toxins where it can irritate the skin and if swallowed, cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Residents on Manitouwabing Lake may be affected depending on their closeness to the algae bloom, the size of the lake, wind direction, water flow, and other environmental conditions that cannot be predicted or controlled.

Due to the many factors involved, government authorities are unable to determine where and when there will be no toxins and users are advised to exercise their judgment before using the water.

If you live near the water where the bloom is visible, do not use it in any way and be advised that a private water system or boiling the water will not remove the toxins. Avoid swimming or taking par tin water sports and if skin contact should occur, wash with soap and water then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove the algae. Limit the amount of fish flesh you eat as some toxins can build up in the creatures. While the water is not closed off, people should still exercise caution in the area.
