Parry Sound Recognizes Volunteers Who Helped Mask Community Amid COVID-19

The town of Parry Sound is commending the work of volunteers who sewed masks for community members amid COVID-19.

When face coverings became essential to stopping the spread of the virus, the West Parry Sound Health Centre Auxiliary stepped up and coordinated to start sewing masks for distribution.

To date, they have given out over 10,000 masks to residents.

In recognition of their efforts and to assist with ongoing costs associated with the program, Parry Sound has made a $1,000 donation to the Auxiliary.

“I’m so proud of our community and how they have pulled together to support one another during the pandemic,” Mayor Jamie McGarvey said in a press release. “The Community Cares Mask Program volunteers have helped to slow the spread of COVID-19. They have played a key role in keeping our community healthy.”

The masks are available in various sizes, including kids’ sizes and the Auxiliary is accepting donations.

“Our communities sewers have worked together to make our mask program successful”, Auxiliary President Carrolle Gray said. “Without the volunteers we could not have put out the thousands of masks.”

The Auxiliary is also thanking the Distler Family for donating office space for the depot.

It’s also thanking the community who’ve made donations for their masks, supporting the mask program and their ongoing efforts to support the Health Centre.

Early on the masks were readily available at local stores for pick-up.

The group has now secured a location at 92 James Street for a mask depot, where masks can be picked-up Monday – Wednesday 9am – 12pm.

The volunteers can be reached at (705) 774-1046.
