Parry Sound Mandatory mask by-law to change

PARRY SOUND, ON-The Town of Parry Sound’s established mandatory mask by-law is going to become null and void to make room for the health unit guidelines.

Parry Sound CAO Clayton Harris told MyParrySoundNow even though they established their own thorough set of guidelines for how the town will mandate the mandatory mask order, it will no longer be in effect on July 24th when the health unit enacts their own by-laws.

Until then, however, the town’s by-law, which is set to come into effect on the 20th, will still be active for four days before switching over.

Harris said that its initial plan was that on July 7th, council would pass a resolution to ask the North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit to put a mandatory requirement in place to wear masks in public places.

When the resolution passed, the town asked if the health unit could provide a response by July 10th.

The health unit later provided its response on the 9th, saying that it was looking into the order and was “non-committal.”

It was from this reaction that council decided to establish its own by-law that would affect only the Town of Parry Sound, which was approved yesterday.

Harris said that it wasn’t until about two hours prior to the meeting back on the 7th, that they received word from the health unit that they were going to enact their own by-law on the 24th.

A portion of the approved Parry Sound by-law states that if the region’s health unit establishes its own mandatory mask by-law, then the one the Town created would become nullified.

The details of the health units mandatory mask by-law will be made available to the public on July 17th and will provide guidelines for businesses.
