Face Coverings Mandated By Health Unit Effective July 24

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is following suit with other public health units by mandating face coverings in certain enclosed public spaces.

Effective Friday, July 24, you will need to use a face covering while in indoor public spaces and public transit as per the province’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

In a press release Monday, Medical Officer of Health for the health unit, Dr. Jim Chirico says the communities have all been following public health recommendations to help keep the number of COVID-19 cases in the district low.

“The recommendations we’ve had in place have been effective during stage 1 and 2 of phase 2, however, as we enter into stage 3 more businesses are opening and social gatherings are growing, resulting in the need to change our public health measures for COVID-19,” Chirico said. “We have to adapt to the current climate.”

The Health Unit says detailed information regarding the mandate, including information for businesses, the community, exemptions and frequently asked questions, is to be shared publically on Friday, Jul. 17, 2020.

This gives businesses at least a week to prepare for the face covering mandate.

Additionally, the Health Unit notes a face covering does not replace physical distancing and other protective health measures such as hand washing and isolating yourself when you have symptoms or come into close contact with someone with or suspected to have COVID-19.

There is currently no specific treatment for the virus.

The Health Unit also adds that it’s important to remember that most people with it have no symptoms or mild symptoms.

People who are mildly ill should isolate and care for themselves at home.

Most will recover in one to two weeks by simply treating the symptoms.

More information is on the health unit’s website.
