Elementary schools to close for strikes

PARRY SOUND, ON-The Elementary Teacher’s Federation of Ontario (ETFO) in the Near North District School Board (NNDSB) is holding two more strikes this week.

All elementary schools within the board will be closed tomorrow and Thursday while teachers go on strike.

Mairghread Knought of the NNDSB said that because of the inability to provide the required supervision to students, JK to grade eight will be out of school for those days.

Knought confirmed that students in high school will be able to go attend school as the strikes only affect elementary teachers.

Knought said that even though the strikes will be taking place, all Early Years programs like Childcare, School-Aged Programs, and EarlyON Child and Family Centres will remain open and will run on their usual schedules.

JJ Blower of Seguin Township said that while the strikes are going on, the town has organized free skate days at the Humphrey Arena. Free skating on Wednesday is between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and on Thursday, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

ETFO President for Near North Rob Hammond said that they want to go back to the bargaining table and put an end to these strikes.

All elementary schools are expected to re-open on Friday.
