PARRY SOUND, ON – The local Fill a Purse for a Sister campaign is being called a huge success as it almost tripled its goal.
The program was Canadawide, collecting purses and backpacks filled with daily necessities for women, youth and men in crisis.
Susan Rivers with the North East Local Health Integration Network told the MyMuskokaNOW.com newsrooms that the group aimed to collect 50 donations but ended up with 135.
“You rock Parry Sound and Area!” Rivers said. “The generosity, support and participation from our area will help to ensure that those in need throughout Parry Sound and Area will receive a purse or backpack of their own, keeping her dignity intact.”
The items were donated to The Esprit Place and East and West Parry Sound Victim Services. Rivers said some last-minute purses will be given to the Salvation Army.
“I wanted to be a campaign lead and bring this to Parry Sound because I know we have women, youth and men in need and this was an opportunity to do something about it,” Rivers said.
She added that Parry Sound was one of 75 municipalities throughout Canada that participated in the movement. She said almost 8,000 total purses and backpacks were collected across the country this year.
The campaign ran from September 1st to December 1st.
