OPP warns locals about SIM card scams

ORILLIA, ON-A new scam is targeting your SIM cards in order to steal personal information.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) are advising the public of a recent scam involving SIM cards.

These fraudsters are using SIM swapping and phone number porting to gain access to your email, social media and financial accounts. Once they have these, they gain access to your calendar, contacts and money.

These scammers can empty your bank accounts, apply for credit in your name or even impersonate you to defraud your entire contact list. All while this is happening, you will lose access to your phone, your bank accounts and will not be able to do anything about it.

Police are suggesting that you keep your personal information personal, like posting your date of birth on social media.

Police are also suggesting that you do not activate automatic password input. Memorize or write down your passwords and emails, so that they are not saved on your mobile device.

Use an offline password manager, contact your phone provider and ask about additional security measures and if you lose mobile service, contact your provider immediately.

If you or someone you know has become a victim of fraud, contact your local police service or if you wish to remain anonymous, contact crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or p3tips.com
