New helpline available for smokers looking to butt out

COTTAGE COUNTRY, ON – The Smoker’s Hotline is no more, but those looking for support to quit have a new number to call.

According to a release from the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, Telehealth Ontario took over the support service in September. The Smoker’s Helpline was operated by the Canadian Cancer Society.

The health unit said Telehealth Ontario is free and confidential. Callers can speak with registered nurses for advice, care and to be referred to health services that best suit their needs.

“We want to assure local residents who are trying to quit smoking that free phone support is still available in Ontario, the only difference being that you need to call a new number,”  Karen Taylor, a Public Health Nurse with the HKPR District Health Unit, said in the release. “The transition has been smooth and seamless and still gives people access to effective support and resources to become tobacco-free.”

The health unit added the Smoker’s Helpline website is still available. It offers resources, access to nicotine gum and patches, online chatrooms, text messages and email support.

“We encourage people to break their tobacco addiction because there are many benefits – and free supports – to help you become smoke-free,” Taylor said.

Anyone looking to call Telehealth Ontario can at 1-866-797-0000.
