McGarvey glad to see former mayor go to parliament

PARRY SOUND, ON – With the federal election in the books, Parry Sound’s mayor is excited for what the future could hold, but is asking residents to be patient.

Scott Aitchison winning the Parry Sound Muskoka riding didn’t surprise mayor Jamie McGarvey. Aitchison is the soon to be former mayor of Huntsville so he knows his way around municipal politics, something McGarvey felt is really important.

“We need someone who is going to understand how municipalities work,” McGarvey said. “They need to know what we have to do being a frontline government and work with the public.”

McGarvey said he hopes to have a great relationship with Aitchison so Parry Sound can have a prosperous next four years.

He added it will take time for Aitchison to get familiar with Ottawa though.

“I think everyone needs to give him that grace period to allow him to do that,” McGarvey said. “He is going to be looking for his inroads and find who he can connect with when we need federal help.”

McGarvey also asked the community to understand Aitchison has a lot more to do and a lot more people to represent now.

The mayor hoped Tony Clement, previous MP for Parry Sound Muskoka, will help show Aitchison the ropes.

“Tony worked and did whatever he could, even when in opposition, to try and support the area,” McGarvey said. “I know Tony and Scott will be having a conversation on moving forward so that Scott is prepared for what is going to be coming his way as well.”

McGarvey said most of all, he appreciated all the candidates who threw their hats into the ring and ran for the riding.

“Everyone ran a respectable campaign from what I could see,” McGarvey said. “They need to be very proud of that. I certainly commend them for putting their names forward and standing for the position.”
