Parry Sound-Muskoka candidates weigh on Trudeau brownface scandal

PARRY SOUND-MUSKOKA- Local candidates in our area have spoken up about the latest scandal facing Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau has been facing massive backlash across the country after three images of him were published by multiple media outlets.

Film obtained by Global News showed Trudeau with his face and arms covered in black makeup, while Time Magazine and others had published photos of Trudeau dressed as Aladdin in brownface.

His federal competitors have responded with shock and called the picture a lack of judgment. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh responded to the latest images saying it questions the sincerity of Trudeau’s words when he talks about multiculturalism and diversity.

Locally, the five candidates in the running for Parry Sound-Muskoka have expressed a mix of reactions.

Liberal candidate Trisha Cowie tweeted her thoughts on the matter, saying it was clear that brown/black face is racist, and that she was angry about his actions.

However, she believed he would be forgiven.

“He has issued an unequivocal apology,” said Cowie.

“I believe Canadians will forgive him and measure his commitment to equality and diversity based on his record while acting as a MP (Member of Parliament) and as PM (Prime Minister), and not based on actions from 20 years ago.”

James Moffat, the campaign manager for NDP candidate Tom Young, told the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom that diversity is part of the DNA for the New Democratic Party, and they don’t tolerate racism of any sort.

“It’s time to stand up for Canadian values of diversity and inclusion,” said Moffat.

“It’s time to celebrate and love people for who they are. Many Canadians are asking themselves today who Justin Trudeau really is.”

He also pointed toward Singh’s comments on the matter.

Green candidate Gord Miller expressed shock and dismay at Trudeau’s actions, as well as “profound disappointment”.

“What he did of course was wrong, but critically, he is a role model,” said Miller.

“He has failed in his responsibilities, and he’s set back societies attempts to heal from past injustices. It’s very regrettable. It’s now reported there are three such instances, and I don’t know if an apology is enough. Something must be done to try to heal the damage that he’s done. “

The newsroom reached out to Conservative Party candidate Scott Aitchison, who indicated he would be focusing on local matters and not commenting about Trudeau’s actions.

A request for comment has also been sent to People’s Party candidate Michelle Smith.
