Internet upgrades coming to Parry Sound area

PARRY SOUND, ON- The internet is going to get faster near Parry Sound.

The federal government announced new funds today for Bell to bring in new or improved high speed internet access and capacity to four communities in the Parry Sound area. The total funding being put forward is $2.2 million, with Bell throwing in $1.4 million.

The total investment, according to the federal announcement, is $3.6 million.

“The additional high-speed Internet projects in Ontario are possible thanks to the top-up to the Connect to Innovate program announced in Budget 2019,” read the announcement.

“As a result of this investment, residents in the Georgian Bay region—specifically the Moose Deer Point First Nation, Dillon, Snug Harbour and Killbear Park—will be able to connect with family and friends, do business online, participate in distance education and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the digital age.”

The new infrastructure is meant to act as the “digital backbone” of the area, carrying data for multiple uses in the area.

“Thanks to Connect to Innovate and its partners, the Parry Sound region will have new or improved access to high-speed Internet,” said Marco Mendicino, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.

“This will make it easier for these communities to access online education and e-health, media and communications, and goods and services, while increasing employment and business opportunities.”

The federal government has put forward around $6 billion for improvements to Canada’s digital infrastructure in their latest budget.
