French River flood warning extended with rain in the forecast

FRENCH RIVER, ON- Residents of French River will have their eyes on the sky this weekend.

According to a bulletin issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Parry Sound District is advising residents in the French River watershed that the flood warning for the area has been extended until June 7th.

The five-day forecast for the area is calling for minimal precipitation in the Lake Nipissing, French & Pickerel River areas, with five to seven millimetres expected between Friday until next Tuesday.

Winds could be an issue and will pick up Sunday into Monday, coming out of the west-northwest at 15 –20 km/hr, with the possibility of stronger gusts.

Daytime temperatures will drop below seasonal norms for much this period, with daytime lows of 15 c and evening lows of 5 c.

The water levels in Lake Nipissing are currently at 196.52 m which is above the “Maximum Non-Damage Water Level” of 196.22.

The inflows into the lake have started to decrease, and discharge into the French River is being evaluated daily.

The lake is still highly vulnerable to rainfall events.

If the region gets any significant rainfall, there will be an increase in water levels in the French River, where people have already been flooded out of their homes.

“Municipalities and residents, especially those in low-lying areas and along shorelines, are encouraged to monitor these conditions and prepare accordingly,” read the bulletin.

“Shorelines and banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and unstable at this time and, when combined with cold open water, pose a serious hazard.”

Residents of the area should keep a close watch on local forecasts and conditions.

French River’s municipal government issued their own bulletin, stating that there are no water releases planned for the local dams. Releases are planned on a daily basis.

Mayor Gisèle Pageau said that they will be keeping their eyes on the skies, and hoping for the best.

She believed that if it didn’t rain, French River residents would hold their own. If it does rain, there will be problems.
