French River water releases on hold for 48 hours: mayor

FRENCH RIVER, ON- The water won’t be rising any further in French River for the next two days.

That’s according to French River mayor Gisele Pageau. On Wednesday afternoon, Pageau told the MyParrySoundNow.com newsroom that water releases from the French River dams have been stopped, as any more releases would have a negative impact on the area.

The municipal government is now hoping for four to six days of little to no rain, in order to give the ground a chance to dry out.

Pageau said the community remains in “critical mode” due to businesses being completely flooded and unable to open. However, she said that sandbagging has remained “up to date”, and the Ministry of Natural Resources have “been great” throughout the situation.

She also said that winds on Lake Nipissing could change the situation, and a meeting will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow to determine next steps about water being released.

No injuries or missing people have been reported from the flooding.
