Feds investing $169m in Hwy. 69 four-laning

The four-laning of Highway 69 is getting a big boost from the federal government.

It’s announced $169.2 million in funding for the ongoing project. According to Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre and Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre, who made the funding announcement, that money will pay for widening another 30 kilometres.

The first stage will see an 11-kilometre section of the highway between the 559 and Shebeshekong Road realigned and then doubled. Crews will also put in place 14 culverts and 22 kilometres of fencing to keep wildlife off the road in an effort to minimize damage to the animal population.

Part two will see 19 kilometres of road four-laned with new bridges going in over Key River, Still River, and Straight Lake. When all that is finished another 40 kilometres of Highway 69 will be left to be four-laned.
