Clement urging feds to join Trillion Tree Campaign

Tony Clement is urging the federal government to join an international effort to plant one trillion trees around the world.

The Parry Sound-Muskoka MP is making the request as his riding is currently in the throes of record flooding. Planting the trees would help offset some of the impacts of climate change, which include increased flooding and reduced biodiversity.

Clement made the plea in the House of Commons, arguing that it’s a better solution than the carbon tax.

There are several international movements engaged in the Trillion Tree Campaign, Clement says, adding that he believes government alone cannot overcome all the challenges associated with climate change.

“Here in Ontario the private sector is already planting 68 million trees every single year,” MP Clement said. “This outstanding effort should be supported and encouraged by government at all levels, so that all of society is mobilized to tackle this existential issue of our times.”
