French school opposition, sidewalk patios on council agenda

There’s a busy slate of items to be looked at by Parry Sound council tomorrow night.

It runs the gamut from opposition to the new French school setting up on the Parry Sound Campus of Canadore College to joining with Seguin Township on wanting to get funding in place for improvements to the Municipal Airport, to a proposal for a one-year trial of sidewalk patios in the downtown.

The issue with the French school is that when the campus was built the town gave Canadore an interest-free, forgivable mortgage with the restriction that the college remains a post-secondary education and training facility. Concern has also been raised in the community about the lessening of space for college students to study, and the issue of having young children in an adult facility.

Also on the slate is a request for a zoning change to a piece of property on Pine Drive. The property is currently a large vacant lot behind Parry Sound Fuels. The zoning change requests an increase in permitted building height as well as a request for a smaller parking lot. The applicant is proposing to build a hotel on the site.
