Town looking for provincial update on super school

The Town of Parry Sound is looking for an update on the status of the new “super school” in Parry Sound from the Minister of Education.

On March 5th representatives of the Near North School Board made a presentation to council that requested that the town contact the ministry requesting that the funds be allocated so the process of getting the new school built could proceed.

However, at last Tuesday’s council meeting the town received correspondence from Mayor Dale Robinson representing McDougall Township requesting that the town delay the request to get things started because the school board’s request affects more than just Parry Sound.

McDougall is arguing, among other points, that too much time has passed since the original Accommodation Review Committee was formed in 2013 that resulted in the 2015 decision to close PSHS, Nobel and McDougall and build a single school.

They also argue that in 2018 the school board had proposed to amend the plan and allow McDougall to keep one of the two schools open. As a result, Parry Sound Council has directed staff request a current status update and the plan moving forward from the Minister of Education.
