New JK-12 school gets go ahead

The Near North District School Board is moving forward with building a new megaschool in Parry Sound.

The board made the decision at Tuesday’s meeting. The JK-12 school is going to be built at 111 Isabella Street, the current address of Parry Sound High School.

It’s going to be a completely new facility. The Ministry of Education first approved a new build in Parry Sound back in 2015. Since then the board has had what it calls substantial consultation with stakeholders and community partners.

Parry Sound High School was chosen as the site to build it in June of 2017 with the ministry then committing $29 million to the project.

“The Board explored a variety of options and considerations with respect to the new school in Parry Sound. However, it is important that this project proceed immediately to ensure that the approved funds can be accessed and utilized,”  says Jay Aspin, board chair.

“After much discussion, it was agreed that moving forward with the Ministry approved plan for a single JK-12 facility best meets the needs of our parents, students and communities in the Parry Sound area.”

The board says staff will be preparing the required Request for Proposal for architectural services in order to move forward as soon as possible.
