Environment Canada rolls out WeatherCAN app with forecasts and push notifications

There’s finally an app for that.

Head over to the Google Play or App Store because Environment Canada has rolled out its official weather forecast app. Severe Weather Meteorologist Ria Alsen says the WeatherCAN not only provides all Canadians with an updated forecast, but it also utilizes the push notification option on your phone to warn you about incoming weather events.

“It’s push notifications for the region you’ve selected,” says Alsen. “You’ll hear an audible tone and you can go to the app and check out the details that we’ve issued.”

That means all special weather statements, watches and warnings will be sent to your phone as soon as Environment Canada meteorologists post them online.

Alsen says the other feature that separates this from other general weather forecast apps is the access to Environment Canada’s radar.

“When you pull up the radar page, it will centre on your current location,” says Alsen. “If you want to experiment and look around surrounding areas you can do that as well.”

Alsen warns, despite running a testing phase, the app is still very new and it may come with some bugs. If you notice any issues or have suggestions on how to improve WeatherCAN you can contact Environment Canada directly through the app in the “Give us your feedback” section.
