Local woman says snowbank caused car crash

A local woman is fed-up and possibly facing a financial loss after she says her car was struck by another vehicle due to the Town’s poor snow removal.

Karen Ainslie-Clarke, a local senior citizen,  says her and another car collided on Great North Road on Saturday at approximately 8:00am.  Ainslie-Clarke attributes the fender-bender to high snow banks that caused an obstruction to her vision.

The lady issued a complaint to the Town stating:

“I just called our Town office to find out which of our councillors oversees the Public Works Department, and to my amazement, there is no overseeing of any department within the Town. I find this extraordinary and concerning. I believe the Town experienced the result of no overseeing in previous years, and I would have hoped you would have learned from that disaster, apparently not. I would assume our duly elected mayor and councillors are driving the same streets that I’m driving on and you must be seeing what I’m seeing, so why has nothing been done? Is it because you are so powerless as I am because there is no accountability to the council or our citizens?”

Ainslie-Clarke says she reached out to the Public Works department on Saturday to inquire about snow removal and she was allegedly told: “we’ll get there when we get there.”

Public Works was unable to comment prior to deadline.

In her complaint, she also expresses concern for school children who cannot see or be seen by oncoming traffic should a child happen to run into the street.

Ainslie-Clarke says that the Town’s winding roads and towering mounds of snow, which she says reach nearly six feet tall, obstructed her vision when she was reversing into oncoming traffic. She says that the other party involved in the crash also did not see her. She says she suspects the damage to her car is upwards of $500. Her complaint will be presented  to the council at the next council meeting, tomorrow evening at 7:00pm.
