Local Girl Guides fundraising for upcoming summer camp

Local Girl Guides are fundraising for summer camp.

According to Bobbi Verstraten, leader of Girl Guides in Parry Sound, as of 2018,  Girl Guides of Ontario has begun to divest all of their provincial camp properties.

The next provincial camp will be in Doe Lake in Sprucedale which is slated to have nearly 2500 girl guides and leaders in attendance. Verstraten noted that the Doe Lake camp is expected to close in 2021-2022.

“Every year, a minimum of one camp is shutting down and we have about four years left before all the camps close,” Verstraten said.

Aside from the Girl Guide Cookie campaign, the local girl guide chapter has applied to the Girl Guides of Ontario to raise additional funds to make sure that all girls can attend the summer camp.

The approximate cost to attend camp is $1000 for girls and $400 for leaders.

Girl Guide cookie sales are said to be a minimum of 25 per cent of their fundraising. In the fall, the girls sold 60 cases are slated to sell 120 cases this spring.

On February 7th, local girl guides will be raising funds by working alongside Boston Pizza staff where 10 per cent of all food sales will go back the Girl Guides fundraising initiatives.

The Celebrity Serve with the Girl Guides fundraising initiative is taking place at 10 Bay Street from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
