Chief weighs-in on federal cabinet shuffle

The federal government has issued another cabinet shuffle and the Minister of Indigenous Services has been replaced.

A federal cabinet shuffle on Monday saw Jane Philpott take over as the president of the Treasury Board and Seamus O’Regan, former Minister of Veterans Affairs has become the new minister of Indigenous services.

“Jane Philpott still has good first nations understanding as to what the issues, financial obligations and situations that we currently deal with. Seamus O’Reagan is new to the position but we have to give these people a chance and see how they work with the First Nations at the same time. Let’s see how things play out over time,” said Magnetawan First Nation Chief Lloyd Myke.

The Chief said he’s not entirely confident with the shuffle results.

“There could be some setbacks but she (Jane Philpott) also holds a very powerful portfolio so what she can do with that, but she definitely has some experience with Indigenous affairs and now fiscal management so I think there could be some benefits too,” he added.

The Chief mentioned that invitation has been made out to minister Seamus O’Reagan by an Anishinabek nation to sit down and talk with the leadership.  That invitation was said to have been extended by the Ontario Regional Chief, Roseanne Archibald.
