Films that Make You Think gearing-up for its 10th year

Glen Hodgson has been running the “Films that Make You Think” Film Club for nearly 10 years now.

The Film Club will enter its 10th year by presentingĀ Poached at the Museum on Tower Hill.

Hodgson says he was inspired to start the documentary film club when he and his friend, and business partner, Bill Webster were discussing the state of the world when they came to the conclusion that the community could benefit from thought-provoking films. He says that the first film he featured in town wasĀ Food Inc. and garnered nearly 40 attendants at the Museum on Tower Hill. As his audience grew to nearly 400 attendants,Ā the venue changed to The Stockey Centre or Trestle Brewing Company.

The club is a non-profit organization though if the organization does generate revenue, it will donate funds to the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve.

Hodgson says he keeps his eyes open on current films by attending the Hot Docs Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and paying close attention to social media sources to keep on top of the latest trends and to help develop relationships with filmmakers.

“Once you get started into that world, its a matter of negotiating performance rights and permission to show the film and satisfy their fee structure,” he said.

In the first few years, Hodgson said that he and his partner began the initiative out of pocket before the biosphere oversaw the project. Documentaries viewing rights can cost nearly $250 USD though, on occasion, a filmmaker may allow the Film Club to show their piece at no cost.

“These are films that are designed to make you think and we’re out there to inspire, we don’t have a hidden agenda,” he added.Ā  You can learn more about the film clubĀ here.
