Residents and cottagers being encouraged to double check what is being stored outside

Winter doesn’t just affect the roads and weather, your belongings could be at risk too.

According to the publication Cottage Life, there are certain things that should not be left out in the shed over the winter.

Cottage Life says that although canned food is non-perishable, if left in the cold, the texture and flavour will be affected but also the food could expand in the cold meaning it will be running the risk of the bacteria that causes botulism forming in the food. Another food item to keep out of the cold is chips which would not survive being frozen and thawed again. According to Cottage Life, people should not leave medicines out in the cold because the water molecules within the meds freezing will change the effectiveness of the pills.

In terms of objects, Cottage Life says you shouldn’t store your hard drives or LCD monitors outside, most hard drives are okay until -20 but after that, they will freeze and break.
