Parking lot scammer dupes resident

A Parry Sound woman who wishes not to be identified says an elderly relative was scammed at the Walmart parking lot.

The woman said the family member was approached last week in the parking lot by a man who she says convinced the relative to buy a Vokel brand home theatre system out of the back of a van. She says they were told by the individual that he had bought too many of the home entertainment units and was hoping to recover some costs.

The woman says she went to the relative’s home to help set the unit up.  That’s when she found that there was only one working speaker. She says the unit barely functions.

The elderly relative paid the scammer an undisclosed amount of money who then insisted on carrying the equipment to his car. It was mentioned that the scammer had six other units in the back of his van.  The relative wasn’t able to get any details, such as a license plate number, from the van.  The incident was not reported to police or Walmart staff.

People are being reminded to be cautious for scammers over the holiday season and not to buy anything without a receipt.
