Muskoka Grown secures $10 million investment for new production facility and retail store/education centre

A Bracebridge-based pot production plant is moving ahead with its retail store plan.

Muskoka Grown recently secured $10 million in private funding. This allows the company to start construction on a building focused on more marijuana production as well as a store and cannabis education centre.

CEO David Grand says public education is one of his top priorities.

“Muskoka Grown’s brand was created exclusively for the adult market,” says Grand, “creating a safe and educational experience for our consumers remains a key value to our company.”

Grand adds he’s looking forward to the new opportunities available to his company.

“We are excited to continue our process towards being a leading premium-craft cultivator in the cannabis industry. There are many exciting directions for our company to grow in Ontario and we will continue to pursue strategic opportunities for Muskoka Grown.”

The company has received half of the funds now to start construction and will receive the rest once it secures its cultivation licence from Health Canada. This will allow Muskoka Grown to pursue a contract with Ontario Cannabis Store and start selling its product to Canadians.

The company will also apply for a sellers licence in order to open a retail store on site next year. The retail option is part of the changes made to the recreational cannabis sale law in Ontario by the Ford Government. Pending decisions by the municipal governments, the province will allow producers like Muskoka Grown an opportunity to sell their products on site.

And Bracebridge officials appear to be on board with this plan, as councillors approved the retail store plan at Muskoka Grown during a General Committee meeting last week. Councillors will have to make a final decision on approving retail marijuana sales in Bracebridge in January, just after the new council term starts.

The Ford Government is not allowing brick-and-mortar stores to open in the province until next April. Muskoka Grown expects to have its retail store and education centre completed by May.
